WYNONIE HARRIS

Resultat d'imatges de WYNONIE HARRIS

Wynonie Harris (August 24, 1915– June 14, 1969), born in Omaha, Nebraska, was an American blues shouter and rhythm-and-blues singer of upbeat songs, featuring humorous, often ribald lyrics. He had fifteen Top 10 hits between 1946 and 1952. Harris is generally considered one of the forerunners of rock and roll. He influenced Elvis Presley, among others.

His dirty blues repertoire included "Lolly Pop Mama" (1948), "I Like My Baby's Pudding (1950), "Sittin on It All the Time" (1950), "Keep on Churnin'" (1952), and "Wasn't That Good" (1953).

Harris's mother, Mallie Hood Anderson, was fifteen and unmarried at the time of his birth. His paternity is uncertain. His wife, Olive E. Goodlow, and daughter Patricia Vest said that his father was a Native American named Blue Jay. Wynonie had no father figure in his family until 1920, when his mother married Luther Harris, fifteen years her senior.

In 1931, at age 16, Harris dropped out of high school in North Omaha. The following year his first child, a daughter, Micky, was born to Naomi Henderson. Ten months later, his son Wesley was born to Laura Devereaux. Both children were raised by their mothers. Wesley became a singer in the Five Echoes and in the Sultans. Later he became a singer and guitarist in Preston Love's band. Eventually, Wesley's grandson (Harris's great-grandson), Jourdan Devereaux, under the pseudonym "L Oquence" began a music career as a hip-hop artist.

In 1935 Harris, age 20, started dating 16-year-old Olive E. (Ollie) Goodlow, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, who came to neighboring Omaha to watch him perform. On May 20, 1936, Ollie gave birth to a daughter, Adrianne Patricia (Pattie). Harris and Ollie were married on December 11, 1936. Later they lived in the Logan Fontenelle projects in North Omaha. Ollie worked as a barmaid and nurse; Harris sang in clubs and took odd jobs. His mother was Pattie's main caretaker. In 1940, Wynonie and Ollie Harris moved to Los Angeles, California, leaving Pattie with her grandmother in Omaha.
Harris formed a dance team with Velda Shannon in the early 1930s. They performed in North Omaha's flourishing entertainment community, and by 1934 they were a regular attraction at the Ritz Theatre. In 1935 Harris, having became a celebrity in Omaha, was able to earn a living as an entertainer, in the depths of the Great Depression. While performing at Jim Bell's Club Harlem nightclub with Shannon, he began to sing the blues. He began traveling frequently to Kansas City, where he paid close attention to blues shouters, including Jimmy Rushing and Big Joe Turner.

His break in Los Angeles was at a nightclub owned by Curtis Mosby. It was here that Harris became known as "Mr. Blues".

With Lucky Millinder[edit]
During the 1942–44 musicians' strike, Harris was unable to pursue a recording career. Instead, he relied on personal appearances. Performing almost continuously, in late 1943 he appeared at the Rhumboogie Club in Chicago. Harris was spotted by Lucky Millinder, who asked him to join his band on tour. Harris joined on March 24, 1944, while the band was in the middle of a week-long residency at the Regal in Chicago. They moved on to New York City, where on April 7 Harris took the stage with Millinder's band for his debut at the Apollo Theatre, in Harlem. It was during this performance that Harris first publicly performed "Who Threw the Whiskey in the Well" (a song recorded two years earlier by Doc Wheeler's Sunset Orchestra).

After the band's stint at the Apollo, they moved on to their regular residency at the Savoy Ballroom, also in Harlem. Here, Preston Love, Harris' childhood friend, joined Millinder's band, replacing the alto saxophonist Tab Smith. On May 26, 1944, Harris made his recording debut with Lucky Millinder and His Orchestra. Entering a recording studio for the first time, Harris sang on two of the five cuts recorded that day, "Hurry, Hurry" and "Who Threw the Whiskey in the Well", for Decca Records . The embargo on shellac during World War II had not yet been rescinded, and release of the record was delayed.

Harris's success and popularity grew as Millinder's band toured the country, but he and Millinder had a falling out over money, and in September 1945, while playing in San Antonio, Texas, Harris quit the band. Three weeks later, upon hearing of Harris's separation from the band, a Houston promoter refused to allow Millinder's band to perform. Millinder called Harris and agreed to pay his asking price of one hundred dollars a night. The promoter reinstated the booking, but it was the final time Harris and Millinder worked together. Bull Moose Jackson replaced Harris as the vocalist in the band.

In April 1945, a year after the song was recorded, Decca released "Who Threw the Whiskey in the Well".[7] It became the group's biggest hit; it went to number one on the Billboard R&B chart on July 14 and stayed there for eight weeks. The song remained on the charts for almost five months, also becoming popular with white audiences.[8] an unusual feat for black musicians of that era. In California the success of the song opened doors for Harris. Since the contract with Decca was with Millinder (meaning Harris was a free agent), Harris could choose from the recording contracts with which he was presented.

In July 1945, Harris signed with Philo, a label owned by the brothers Leo and Edward Mesner. Harris' band was assembled by Johnny Otis, and the group recorded the 78rpm record "Around the Clock". Although not a chart-topper, the song became popular and was covered by many artists, including Willie Bryant, Jimmy Rushing and Big Joe Turner.

Harris went on to record sessions for other labels, including Apollo, Bullet and Aladdin. His greatest success came when he signed for Syd Nathan's King label, where he enjoyed a series of hits on the U.S. R&B chart in the late 1940s and early 1950s. These included a 1948 cover of Roy Brown's "Good Rocking Tonight", "Good Morning Judge" and "All She Wants to Do Is Rock". In 1946, Harris recorded two singles with pianist Herman "Sonny" Blount, who later earned fame as the eclectic jazz composer and bandleader Sun Ra.

In 1950, he released the double-sided hit, "Sittin' On It All the Time" b/w "Baby, Shame On You" (King 4330) and in 1951, he covered Hank Penny's "Bloodshot Eyes" (King 4461). His risque approach to material at times, made his tracks "Keep On Churnin'" (1952) and "Wasn't That Good" (1953) jukebox favorites in the early 1950s. Slightly earlier tracks including "I Want My Fanny Brown" and "Lollipop Mama", were other sides that Harris sang of a lascivious nature.
Harris transitioned between several recording contracts between 1954 and 1964. In 1960 he cut six sides for Roulette Records that included a remake of his hit "Bloodshot Eyes" as well as "Sweet Lucy Brown", "Spread the News", "Saturday Night", "Josephine" and "Did You Get the Message". He also became more indebted, and was forced to live in less glamorous surroundings.

In 1964 Harris resettled for the last time in Los Angeles. His final recordings were three sides which he did for the Chess Records label (in Chicago) in 1964: "The Comeback", "Buzzard Luck" and "Conjured". His final large-scale performance was at the Apollo, New York in November 1967, where he performed with Big Joe Turner, Big Mama Thornton, Jimmy Witherspoon and T-Bone Walker.

On June 14, 1969, aged 53, Harris died of esophageal cancer at the USC Medical Center Hospital in Los Angeles.

“Boogie Woogie” as a piano instrumental, is the sixteenth track found on a 1989 compilation CD titled “World of Jazz: The Jazz Piano” for M.C.R. Productions (Holland). The liner notes of the CD also list this track title as “Boogie Woogie (a.k.a. Pine Top’s Boogie Woogie)” – music composed by C. Smith. William "Willie" Lee Perryman (a.k.a. Piano Red and/or Dr. Feelgood) was a self-taught American blues pianist of the barrel house blues style genre. Further research indicates Piano Red was born in 1911 and died in 1985. His simple, hard-pounding left hand and his percussive right hand, coupled with his cheerful shout, brought him considerable success over three decades of recording. As a result of diligent and lengthy research, the original date of this recording could not be sourced – nor could the original record/album from which this track originated. The CD liner notes, although scant, did not indicate any further information; therefore, the producer of this video cites Copyright 1989 M.C.R. Productions (Holland) – respectfully yours, Anishnaube.

David Maxwell was born in Waltham, Massachusetts, United States. He was educated at the University of Rochester and Eastman School of Music.Maxwell became friends with Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson in high school, and they played together at several local engagements. Maxwell also met and befriended Spann around this time.

In the early part of the 1970s, Maxwell came to the attention of the guitarist Freddie King, and supplied his piano accompaniment for a couple of years. He worked backing Bonnie Raitt in 1974 and 1975, and then James Cotton between 1977 and 1979 In the 1980s he returned to Boston and formed David Maxwell and the Blues Wizards. He later both toured and recorded with Otis Rush in the 1990s, having built up his reputation by further interim work with others including John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Rogers, Paul Oscher, Hubert Sumlin, Bob Margolin, John Primer and also Ronnie Earl (from 1990 to 1992).Maxwell played on Cotton's 1997 Grammy Award winning album, Deep in the Blues. His follow-up recording, Max Attack (2003), was re-released on 95 North Records in 2005.Maxwell appeared at the Ottawa Bluesfest in 2009.

Goldmine recently called Bedard “one of the best rockabilly pickers on the planet,” while Record Roundup wrote “Bedard may not become the next trendy thing, but as far as this kind of music, he’s already the next cool thing.” The Kingpins have developed a reputation as one of Michigan’s best bands since their formation in the early ’90s. Their debut album, Upside, was named “Blues Album of the Year” by CD Review in 1992. Upon the album’s release, Guitar Player referred to it as “a brainy composite of blues phrasing and rockabilly bad-boy twang.” Following the release of “Pickin’ Apart the Past” in 2011, Bedard has now released a live blues recording “Further On”.

This recording taken from the 1999 CD "Paul Williams:The Complete Recordings Vol. 1 1947-1949" (Spain)

Paul "Hucklebuck" Williams (July 13, 1915 – September 14, 2002) was an African American jazz and blues saxophonist, bandleader and songwriter. His record, "The Huckle-Buck", recorded in December 1948, was one of the most successful R&B records of the time. In his Honkers and Shouters, Arnold Shaw credits Williams as one of the first to employ the honking tenor sax solo that became the hallmark of rhythm and blues and rock and roll in the 1950s and early 1960s.

Williams was born in Lewisburg, Tennessee, and grew up in Bowling Green, Kentucky, before moving with his parents to Detroit at the age of 13. He started learning saxophone and played in school bands before forming his own band, Paul Williams and his Kings of Rhythm, with trumpeter Lloyd Henderson, in the mid-1930s, and playing in local clubs. The band split up during World War II, and Williams then joined Clarence Dorsey's band. He toured with the band, then known as the Sensational Six, until 1945 when he left to join another local band, led by King Porter (born James A. Pope, 1916–1983).

Williams became known for his showmanship in Porter's band, and made his first recordings with Porter for the Paradise label in 1947. He attracted the attention of agent and record producer Teddy Reig, and, under Reig's tutelage, formed his own band. Credited as the Paul Williams Sextette, they recorded in Detroit for Savoy Records in September 1947, and "Thirty-Five Thirty" (named for Joe Von Battle's record shop at 3530 Hastings Street) reached #8 on the Billboard R&B chart (then called the "race records" chart) in early 1948. Wiliams followed up its success with three further chart hits released in 1948 – "The Twister" (which according to Joel Whitburn "had a 'rockin' beat" and "laid the foundation for Hank Ballard's 'The Twist'"); "Waxie Maxie"; and "Walkin' Around" – all featuring the honking tenor sax of Wild Bill Moore.

Williams and his band toured nationally, and his concerts became increasingly popular and riotous. Reig claimed that he taught Williams to perform vigorously, "kicking as he played, bending and dipping, getting down on the floor while blowing that saxophone." At a rehearsal for a concert, either in Newark or Baltimore, he heard Lucky Millinder and his band playing a tune, originally known as "D'Natural Blues", that had been written for Millinder by Andy Gibson. The composition was strongly influenced by "Now's the Time", recorded by Charlie Parker for Savoy Records at a 1945 session produced by Reig. Williams began performing Gibson's composition, and at a show in Devon, Pennsylvania, noticed that audience members were performing a new dance, called the Hucklebuck, to it. Williams renamed the tune "The Huckle-Buck", and his recording, made in Detroit in December 1948 with Reig producing, rapidly rose to the top of the R&B chart. It reached the #1 spot in March 1949, staying in that position for 14 weeks, and spending a total of 32 weeks on the chart. It reportedly sold half a million copies, and broke sales records.

"The Huckle-Buck" established Williams' popularity, and he was billed as Paul "Hucklebuck" Williams for the remainder of his career.[5] He had three further R&B chart successes in 1949 – "House Rocker", "He Knows How to Hucklebuck", and "Pop-Corn" – but these failed to match the earlier record's success. However, his band continued to be popular, and played on many of Amos Milburn's recordings. With Tiny Grimes, Williams co-headlined the first Moondog Coronation Ball, promoted by Alan Freed in Cleveland on March 21, 1952, often claimed as the first rock and roll concert, and was the only act to perform before the show was abandoned because of the size of the crowd. He also played on many of the nationwide concert tours organised by Freed.

Williams left Savoy Records in 1952, and recorded for several labels thereafter. Band members during the 1950s included Moore, Noble "Thin Man" Watts, trumpeter Phil Guilbeau, and singers Danny Cobb, Jumpin' Jimmy Brown, Joan Shaw and Connie Allen. He worked in the Atlantic Records house band, backing singers including Ruth Brown, and performed with musicians including Elmore James and Dave "Baby" Cortez. He was musical director for Lloyd Price and James Brown in the early 1960s, and performed with Otis Redding and Tommy Tucker. He worked as a session musician in New York City before setting up a booking agency in 1968. In 1986, he appeared at a Smithsonian symposium on rhythm and blues music at the National Museum of American History, and received the Rhythm and Blues Foundation Pioneer Award in 1992.
Williams died in September 2002, in New York, at the age of 87.

Movie recorded at the annual 5th "Blues and Boogie Reunion" Concert in Terrassa, a town in Spain about 25 km's outside Barcelona.

Ricky Nye (Rick Neiheisel) is based out of Cincinnati, Ohio USA and often plays at many of the big European Festivals.

Of the two songs in the Video, Ricky introduces the first one, "Going to Cincinnati" - thus saving me the need to add anything here.

The second track, "Down the Road a Piece" is a song written in 1940 by Don Raye as a Boogie Woogie for the Will Bradley/Ray McKinley big band. It gained a top 10 hit in the closing months of the year. The song became a standard of Rock and Roll, recorded by at least 96 artists including Amos Milburn, Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, Foghat, Bruce Springsteen, Manfred Mann and Jerry Lee Lewis, to name but a few.

RICKY NYE (Rick Neiheisel) was born in Cincinnati in 1956, and was bitten by the music bug at the age of five. Ricky began his performing career at age twelve with his family’s band, and upon his return to the area in 1979, his musical journeys on piano, organ & accordion have taken him through jazz, funk, rock & roll (years 1979-1985 with legendary cult faves The Raisins), country, zydeco, New Orleans styles, boogie woogie & blues- knowledge which has landed him on countless recording sessions and as accompanist to renown blues artists. In his twenties and thirties, Ricky established working relationships and friendships with Cincinnati blues icons such as Big Ed Thompson, H-Bomb Ferguson and fellow pianists Big Joe Duskin and Pigmeat Jarrett.

After years of leading RICKY NYE & THE RED HOTS (winners of BEST BLUES BAND in the Cincinnati Enquirer's 2001 CAMMY awards), Ricky now focuses his attention on his trio/quartet RICKY NYE INC. (formerly The Swingin' Mudbugs, the band behind Ricky's 1998 release "Piano Is Fun!" and 2003's "Quick 'N' Dirty") and RICKY NYE &THE PARIS BLUES BAND, based in Paris, France (who have released four CDs: "VIlle du Bois"; "Ricky Nye & The Paris Blues Band"; "Jump Steady" and a compilation titled "OH MAN!").

Ricky is a solid solo performer (winning BEST SOLO ACT in the 2001 & 2002 CAMMY Awards) and also frequently performs in duet settings: with upright bass or drums accompaniment; and with vocalists extraordinaire Bekah Williams, Dottie Warner & Katie Laur.

Oher local accolades include BEST BLUES/R&B INSTRUMENTALIST in 2002 CAMMYS; BEST BLUES/R&B ARTIST in the 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2010, 2013 & 2014 CEA Awards held by CityBeat Magazine, and BEST LOCAL MUSICIAN 2012, 2013 & 2014 CITYBEAT MAGAZINE "Best Of Cincinnati" Readers Poll Awards.

Since 1996, Ricky has been a regular performer on the Arches Boogie Stage, part of Cincinnati, OH's Cincy Blues Fest (where he was inducted into the INTERNATIONAL BOOGIE WOOGIE HALL OF FAME in 2013), which put him in association and friendships with some of the finest blues and boogie pianists from around the world, such as Fabrice Eulry (Paris); Lluis Coloma (Barcelona) ; Chris Conz (Switzerland): Joerg Hegemann (Germany); Julien Brunetaud (Paris);  Renaud Patigny (Brussels); Martijn Schok (Netherlands); Eric-Jan Overbeek a.k.a. Mr. Boogie Woogie (Netherlands); Julian Phillips (U.K.); Silvan Zingg (Switzerland); and Jean-Paul Amouroux (Paris), who have all hosted Ricky for their international boogie woogie festivals and touring dates.

And since 1998, Ricky has been the producer of the annual BLUES & BOOGIE PIANO SUMMIT, from which CDs have been released from the years 1999-2010.

You can also check out this link for a more extended bio by  Mike Breen of CityBeat Magazine

RICKY NYE INC. features Ricky Nye (piano, vocals) along with Paul Ellis (drums): Chris Douglas (upright bass), and special guests Ray Heckman or Brian "Boss" Hogg (tenor sax), playing piano blues and ballads, New Orleans stylings and traditional boogie woogie. The group has experienced great success with the release of their discs "Swingin' Some Blues" (2014); "Quick 'N' Dirty" (2003) and "Piano is Fun!" (1998). This aggregation is adept at either simmering or creating a rollickin' good time!
